Ford might consider a GT40
#15
Based on the horde of people oogling over this thing at the Detroit car show, I'd say there is definately a lot of interest in it. It really is a beautiful car. The concept was fairly "polished", meaning that it looked nearly drivable. I don't think for 1 second that Ford will build it though. Too risky for them, given their recent announcements of closing plants and reducing their workforce. And the price would have to come down to high 5-figures to sell, competing against (and likely beating the snot out of) the Viper, Z06, NSX, 911 Turbo, etc.

Ford doesn't have the golden apples to build this car. Ford hasn't built a real car before or since the GT40. They don't need to close plants, just fire the entire art department right up to the VP in charge of it. They have no concept of form (let alone function). The latest "oval is good shape" design is hideous. The oval car with an oval rear window with an oval heater-AC-radio panel in the middle of the dashboard is hideous. The Mustang is another example. It looks ok, but it's the corporate flagship car, it should look fabulous. Their only hope was to go retro with the Thunderbird, which started the american sports car battle and caused Chevy to build the Corvette. Did they build a corvette fighter? No they built a good looking chevette fighter.
Oh, yes nurse, thank you for the medicine. Ok I calm now...
That said, the GT40 has been at the top of my list since I first saw one in a mall parking lot in 1982. My list is full of powerful cars that I lust for like any Ferrari 512, Daytona, Dino, etc., Shelby Cobra, F1, Mach 1, etc. I don't feel they should change the body work one cm. It's a beautiful timeless form. Not that a six figure price tag will ever be in my price range, but my vote is build it so that someone can buy it so that I might see it on the road some time.

If and when Ford brings back the GT-40 it will be a 'GT-43' or more........the original has a tiny interior, second only to the Porsche 962. Yes, I have 'sat/wedged my body' in both at vintage and I.M.S.A. races. No, I did not drive either one. I agree that the GT-40 (and the Porsche 962) are timeless in their design and beauty.

Ford could use a image boost... Look what Viper did. I saw the Autoshow car today and it had a large crowd (although no where near as many real buyers as the Mini not to far away ). The GT-40 display was large and it appeared Ford was hoping for a hit; so it may make the build list. Big thing would be price, and they are not talking (I asked).
