In my opinion getting an R makes sense only if you can get an amazing deal on one. The GTI is just so, so good. If I could go back in time I'd get a DSG, though - the manual's gearing is just too tall and unless you're treating it like an S2000 (shifting at redline every gear) upshifts can be disappointing. That and the clutch on the 6MT can't even handle a simple stage 1 flash without slipping, if you're into that sort of thing.

I know it sounds like I'm complaining but literally everything else about this car is wonderful. I can't believe I got it for the price I paid.

I've owned a 2017 R for a little over a year and put 18,000 miles on it. Best car I've ever owned. I drive it year around in Minnesota, using as set of snows in the winter.

I have a manual, but I think the DSG is faster. The torque is very much the opposite of the S2000's that I am test driving in my search for a roadster. Third gear on entrance ramps is just amazing. Also, the seats that come with an R or GTI are superb.

It is a very practical car. I haul a lot of stuff in it.
