what's a decent ride for around $20k or slightly above? good looks, reliability & gas mileage are important. don't really care about 0-60, HP or drag numbers at all. prefer 4 drs but might consider 2dr. prefer FWD but RWD/AWD may be ok too. should be auto though.
for $20-23k, i was thinking hyundai sonata or kia optima, but what options do i have in the slightly used market? something from ~2007 with less than 25,000 miles?

Used Acura TSX would be my call. I have a real soft spot for those cars (and she'll never know that everywhere else in the world it's a Honda)

2011 Hyundai Sonata. You can get a brand new one for around low $20K well equipped.
Great fuel economy, great warranty, and if she's financing she'll get a better deal than financing a used car.

New? Sonata. Awesome mileage, spacious, comfortable, pretty nice.
Used TSX is a pretty good choice. It's on the small size and sprung a bit heavy for some. If those aren't deal breakers it's pretty tough to beat as far as reliability and mileage go in an upscale used cars.

+1 for used TSX. I'm considering one myself as a DD. You can find them easily for well below $20,000. Hyundai's are getting real nice, but like any new car they have a lot of depreciation left and while Hyundai's cars have improved significantly their resale value has not.
