Default Got a postcard in the mail about my driving skilz!

I got this postcard in the mail. It was mailed with my name and address. I consider it a true privilege and honor that someone would go through so much effort to recognize and compliment my driving skill and ability:

That's hilarious! I guess he didn't think it was on a closed road and computer generated...

Isn't that abuse of privilege by the cop (or whoever it was)? I'm assuming he wasn't on duty at the time, otherwise he'd have done something about it... If he wasn't on duty, I'm pretty sure he's not allowed to go look up your information on a whim to send you a snarky post card rather than a ticket. Also, it's noted that the ticket goes to the driver, not the vehicle, so if they don't stop you right then, it's usually unenforceable/thrown out of court.

Yeah, it's most likely an overzealous off-duty cop who is self-righteous and likely abusing his right to look up license plate numbers for owner names and addresses of vehicles who are driving in a manner that is disdainful of said off-duty cop. It's BS.

What ticket? What is unenforceable?

Sure, the cop wasted time looking up a plate, but he has the access. I doubt there is any law agains them looking up a plate for any reason. Especially with the freedoms everyone gave away with the Patriot Act (and other politico stuff like it). Not that I want to get into a politics discussion on here.
It's pretty tame. He wasn't threatening you in any way. he was just saying you're a bad driver - tailgater!
Not throwing stones either, I tailgate really bad and I recognize it.

The fact that he mailed it on his own dime? Meh.

If anything, he wasted a couple of bucks of taxpayer money as time while researching. There are worse things that "bad" cops do.

Personally, I think it's funny...and stupid.

I'd frame that.

A license plate is in "public view" and public record. Anyone can go to any DMV and get your information just like accident reports are available to anyone for a fee. Your license plate is also available to any plate reader equipment to.

Did you read the link I posted? The LEOs in there stated that a cop cannot just look up personal information (like an address) on a whim, unless it is for official purposes or, more specifically, to issue a citation. Furthermore, a mailed ticket after the offense is usually unenforceable. I know the OP didn't get a ticket - it was purely for informational purposes (ie, to show that it's all show and has no real teeth).

Pretty sure that's not an official response from the police (the "bad driver" postcard)...which indicates that whoever did this probably did so illegally.

I would just be so happy that is was more or less a warning and not a ticket!
