[QUOTE=no_really,Aug 11 2006, 10:05 AM] sorry, as of last year, the smog emissions by new diesel cars still were far worse than those by gas versions.

The only relevant point is that emissions from current diesel vehicles are below the standards of gasoline engines, and as such, offer no benefit to either the consumer or the enironment. The only reason diesel has ever been considered for commuter vehicles is the greater efficiency and associated fuel cost savings.
that sounded almost like a contradiction. if diesels are generally more fuel efficient than gasoline cars, then that WOULD provide a benefit to the consumer (keeping in mind that for the most part in SoCal, diesel is similar in price to premium)

This is not true. Diesels release tons of nitrogen and sulfur pollution that isn't present in petrol (hence the smell). Europe isn't using new diesel technology that commonly. The first clean diesel was made by Honda, and that car was the Accord CDI (75 mpg, 140 mph!). To show how recent this is, this car was announced like only two years ago. Mercedes-Benz followed through with clean diesel technology as well. Rumors say the next Prius is a 1.0 liter turbocleandiesel ("TCDI?").

Good, glad to see more companies are trying to bring diesel over to the American market ASAP. Would love to have that european civic diesel. Althoguh odds are onec VW has their diesels out in 08, i'll probably get the golf diesel as a DD.
