Default How many here have driven a muscle car?

Just wondering how many people here have actually driven a muscle car [from 1966-1972, not the new ones]? Post a story about the car and your driving experience.

1970 Mustang Mach 1. Heavily Modded 351 Windsor, connected to a Borgwarner T-10, racing clutch, and a 9 inch rear with 4.11s.....no power brakes.

Fun, loud, exhausting.

Also a '67 Mustang Fastback, 302 and 3 speed auto....much more fun.

Niether was a handler, I could carve back roads better in my 1987 Escort Pony.....

Not too many stories....people wanting to race, a day of doing burnouts at every stop sign and traffic light. Crusing around....

1970 440 Cuda - this was my first new car. Put a rear sway bar off a hemi car on it so that it would handle a little. Actually it handled well enough once the bar was on it to dust most stuff I ran up against. Fun car that took a lot of engine mods to get where I wanted it. Wanted a W-30 442. Couldn't afford it.

1968 SS427 Impala- this was my Dad's. Put a lot of miles on it for him. Nice high performance big car. Highway hauler.

1971 455 HO Trans-Am - started out as my Mom's car. Bought it from her in 1974. She bought a new SD 455. Nice combination of hustle and handling. Loved the look. They made less than 2,000 of them. Interior was a big step up from the Cuda. Ran high 13s stock on Polyglass tires. Probably would have run low-mid 13s on drag radials if we'd had them. Left it stock.

1970 Plymouth Superbird 440-6 4 speed- My uncles car. Never have been in a car that felt better at speed. At 160 the car felt like it was falling forward through the air. Solid as rock as fast as you wanted to drive it.

Multiple 340 Cudas 1968/1969 - Three good friends driving these. Nice cars that you just don't see anymore. Decent handling and that 340 fooled some folks. Driving my buddy's 69 sold me on buying the 1970. One of the best sounding stock cars I've ever been around.

1969 Hemi Charger - Friends car. Tried to sell it to me, but I had just finished getting my Cuda where I wanted it. Looking back I should have bought it for the $1,500 he was asking. Bolt ons intake, exhaust and cam. Ran 120 traps. Drove it some. It was a lot of fun in a straight line, but it handled like a dump truck. Just thinking about it makes me grin.

1965 GTO - 3 dueces and a 4 speed, with Royal Bobcat package. This deal ran strong. I tried to get my dad to let me buy this one used my junior year in high school. He wanted me to live to be a senior. Had a couple of pretty extended test drives in this.

1967 427/400 Corvette coupe - Friends car. I worked on it for him, so I got some driving time. Still want one of my own. Marlboro maroon. Side pipes. 4 speed. Really a nice car. Needed more tire.

1968 GT500KR 4 speed - One night on the town in this deal. It was a decent running car. It also needed more tire. Handling was better than the usual big block pony car. Nice looking car and a bunch of fun.

That's about all I can remember in a hurry. I'm getting old.

Sure.

My dad's 1971 Cadillac Eldorado with the largest engine ever put in a passenger car, the 500 cu in. You could just about hear the gas running in the lines when you stepped on the gas! I recall getting 8 MPG. And heavy as it was, with the engine over the front wheels, you could still spin those tires. Um... my dad never knew about that, k? But it was also a great ride for a date, with that huge front bench seat.

I owned a '66 Mustang. Lousy brakes, loose steering, and I suppose not really a muscle car. The '71 Mach I with 351 Windsor I had briefly was. But it was still a worse car!

Dad's '66 Pontiac LeMans, pointy-nose lead sled that I really wish he kept for me to have later.

My buddy's '70 Plymouth Duster with the 318. Lots of good times were had in that machine!

Drove a bunch of '67-69 Camaros. Really popular hot rod when I was graduating high school. My favorite has to be a more recently hot-rodded '69 with a 383 stroker, cammed (and 8.5K RPM rev limit), Demon carb (that took forever for him to tune), and Flowmaster series 40 exhaust. That car REALLY needs a LSD rear end. Want to leave a single black stripe in the lot? No problem, how long? Here it is --

white 69' camaro. No LSD, steering was terrible, and when you hit the brakes and realized they didn't do anything it put the fear of god into you. It had a ton of character and I enjoyed driving it.

Rode in a '69 Small Block C3 T-Top. Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to drive it.

Very similar to this one:

I had a 1969 AMC AMX 343 4spd 4.56 rear. Lots of fun to drive. All the controls are heavy stiff and slow to respond. But it was still fun. It had a bit of a floaty front end feel. More suited to staight line work.

Is a Corvette considered to be a muscle car?

This is mine, bought it when I was 18. Sold when 21 and bought an S2000.

It's a 1973 Holden LJ Torana. It had a 260hp straight 6 with big cams. (Holden being the Aussie version of GM). The wheels are pindly little 13x7" ahhaha. With this set up it ran a 13 second quarter mile.

That was swapped out for a stroked EFi 5.8L (355ci hence the number plate) V8 after I got bored of the power.

BIGGGG mistake. This motor lunched the gearbox and lunched the diff.

Had to put a supra gearbox in and a skyline differential (R31 skyline) and upgraded the brakes all round and put 15x9" wheels on the back. The car is amazingly small and light in this guise it ran a 12.3 sec quarter mile with loads of wheel spin. It was faster with an easy take off and then short shifting into 2nd I found.

This is what it looked like with the V8 and half cage

I found myself shifting gear and hooking the steering wheel to the right every time the tacho swept past 3000rpm haha

p.s I know it might not be the greatest looker paint wise, but the body was relatively rust free and straight PLUS I was only 18 at the time so I wasn't exactly rich.

James
