I am sickly in love with this car.

Yeah the improvements in tires and likely brakes shouldn't be underestimated. Also, if we are talking older Ferraris we must also consider that many were still using Hotchkis drives and the like thus they would have many of the issues we associate with leaf sprung cars.
Still, there is often something very visceral about the older cars that is lost in the refinement of the newer cars. I'm not sure that is true if we are talking real race cars (a Formula Ford for example vs a Zonda which is a road car). I would say a modern FF is every bit as visceral as an older one.
Still, in the end it comes down to what you want the car to do. I personally am not overly interested in road cars as track day toys so I would rather not have a car that is heavily compromised for the track. I want something I really enjoy driving. The S2000 certainly is enjoyable to drive on the road even if it isn't the fastest thing out there. While I love the Corvette I do find it a bit nub on the road thus some of the pleasure of driving it is lost even though it's fast.
I regret to say I haven't driven many vintage cars (unless you count a modern Formula Vee as vintage... which you probably should). Vintage cars often have a lot of character. That doesn't mean I would want to put up with vintage as a daily driver but really none of these cars are. As a sunny weekend toy, why not go for something oozing in character? I've been seriously considering building a 550 Sypder replica for precisely that reason.

My great uncle flew one over Italy as a bomber escort. Shot down once. Made it back to safety. Shot down again a few months later, spent the rest of the war in a prison camp.
RIP Leo.

No, I'd much rather take an Enzo, Carrera GT, Egg, Zonda, Veyron, 599, 458, Furai (if Mazda gives it to me) or even an LFA over any of those retros (no matter how much those retros are "worth" to collectors).
IMO, this car is much hotter than any of the posted retro (and probably drives much better too):
