Kia Sportage = rebadged Hyundai Tucson. Both are garbage. You get the size, weight, sloppy handling and bad economy of a truck but with the mediocre off-road capability of FWD-based unibody SUV's. So if you're going to get a wimpy off-roader, get a CRV. Much better on-road handling, decent economy and Honda reliability. The previous generation Sportage is a different story, with a body-on-ladder-frame and 2-speed transfer case. It was rugged like the old Samurais and Sidekicks, but raw and sometimes unreliable. Don't confuse the two (Like Suzukis, sometimes people say the new Sportage is great off-road thinking of the old one). The Sorento doesn't fit in here as it is a crappy econobox car, and I don't have experience with it.

I got your solution and should be no brainer for 5 to 6 grand. 87-95 Nissan D21 4 cyl pickup . These usually last between 300 and 400 thousand miles and are damn near indestructible. Rust seemed to be a problem on early ones so try to get one close to the 95 model . Stay away from 96 and 97 models due to all those sensors!
