Post Insideline: First Drives 135i!

To put it plainly, the 2009 BMW 135i is more than merely good. It raises the standard of measure for small coupes to a whole new level of excellence. It is one of the purest expressions of the BMW character since the 1971 BMW 2002 tii.

Search if you will, but you can take it from us; there is simply no more accomplished car for $30,000 than the 2009 BMW 135i.

The Numbers Tell the Story
The numbers tell the story. The 2009 BMW 135i coupe gets to 100 kph (62 mph) in just 5.3 seconds and the standing kilometer (fast becoming a standard performance benchmark among Europe's more sporting carmakers) in 24.6 seconds. To give this speed some perspective, the new 2008 BMW M3 is just 0.5 second and 1.3 seconds quicker to the same marks respectively. Even more important, this 135i coupe will rip from 50-75 mph in 4th gear in just 5.0 seconds

Nice! Wonder what the other mags will test the performance at? This is going to kill the G37 in sales.

No magazine's have actually strapped the car on their computers. Edmunds' acceleration numbers are straight from BMW. I've read about 5-6 "first drives'' and all BMW did was hand them the keys. In another month you'll see some real numbers.

I'll bet my life that 60 comes in about 4.7-4.8sec stock. BMW has this nice little habit of over-estimating accleration and under-estimating horsepower.

Is there anything in here that we didn't expect? We knew the engine and we knew it wasn't for everyone in the appearance dept.

I agree the that the G goes up against the 3. But if you do just a little bit of research there are sooooo many G35 drivers that are interested in the 135i. Just go to 1addicts.com and you'll be surprised why.

That magazine cover cracks me up...The King is Dead. Might be just a tad mis-leading since the 335 owns the G in every measurable performance category but it costs more...I wonder why? I think the fact that they mention the 2002 indicates that the 135 will be fairly light and nimble which I have believed it would be all along. I don't believe it will be less than 100 lbs. lighter than the 3er...I believe it will be in the 3,100 lb. range and should be a blast.

I'm with you 100percent on that derryck. Lets not forget that MT says that Infiniti supplied that tired 335i. Its ashamed that many dont know that weight game that BMW plays. Whatever, their loss.

I will probably get over the 1-series' awkward styling, but it is a real pity the car doesn't look better. Nonetheless, the 1-series is a step in the right direction for BMW.

As an aside, why are we, on car boards, so damn obsessed with defining EXACTLY what car competes with a certain car? Doesn't a car compete with whatever other cars a particular buyer is considering? I don't know how others shop for a car, but I look at all kinds of shit that looks interesting to me. Of course the 135i competes with the G37. Both are RWD, 300-plus h.p., sporty coupes priced in the high $30Ks. Does that mean the 335i doesn't compete with the G37? Of course not. People looking at a 335i may look at a G37 as well. Cars are not interchangeable commodities. People may cross-shop cars that are not exactly alike. That's kinda the point of having choices. End rant.
