Default M3s and M5s 00+

Lately I've seen bmw m3s and m5s 00+ in the mid price range of $20k. I remember new was like $60k for m3s and $90k for m5s. Is there any reason these cars are a lot cheaper now? In some ads the m5 cost a lot less than the m3. Did these cars have any known problems?

You won't find an E46 M3 for $25K unless it's been beat to pieces or has very high mileage. You definitely won't find an E39 M5 for mid $20K unless it's practically destroyed. The engine is worth $10K by itself, pretty much.

Bottom line, you're either looking at crappy cars or you're mistaken on your prices.

A decent mileage E46 M3 will run you $30K+. A decent mileage E39 M5 will run you $38K+.

my friend paid $27,000 for a 2001 or 2002 M3 with 100,000 miles....and promptly had to replace parts for $2,000.

(that was funny - we laugh about it now )

as others have said, if you've actually found E46 M3s and E39 M5s in the 20k range (even high 20s) they are probably gonna require a decent amount of maintenence RIGHT OFF THE BAT. then who knows what will happen in the next 10k miles.

dude you can't quote ebay prices until the auction is over or if the reserve hasn't been met.

A quick Autotrader search turned up several CPO cars in my area for $35-40k. Granted it is alot more than $28k but at the same time, in light of all these 325i/IS250/G35 posts going around, I'd roll with a CPO Beast over one of those snoozers in a heartbeat.

PS- based on what I've seen, these cars are tanks and many owners have racked up 100,000+ miles loving every minute of it

Carbon buildup is an issue for some E39 M5's.
