Thumbs up Mercedes Benz to introduce new Inline 6 Engine!

This is some of the best automotive news I've heard all year! I feel like everything MB used to stand for started to go straight down the shitter right around the time they replaced their inline sixes with V6 engines, around the end of the 20th century.

Awesome news. Loved the S54 in my M Coupe - one of the best "street" engines I've ever had the pleasure to drive - so I have a soft spot for straight sixes.

Interesting that they've designed it for electrification and are implementing that new 48 volt system as well. Those are key to making these engines suitably powerful (torquey) and efficient at the same time. Electric compressor for ultra-low-end torque boost is also very neat.

The tech they're implementing in these engines is mind-boggling. I'm constantly amazed that there is still so much development going into ICEs.

Interesting idea to drive the accessories and pumps with an electric device. Wonder if there will be KERS technology involved?

One of my favourite AMG's is the C36. Such a great car in all regards, especially the brilliant I6. Wish I could find a nice example (or any for that matter) in my part of the world.

Is this a pushrod engine? I see no OHC's. But, I do see what looks like a cutaway push rod?

Now that turbo 4s have peaked in efficiency, I suspect we will see a return to bigger 6-cyl engines and different directions for continued efficiency.

If you look at a close-up of engine cutaway, seems that it has Lost Motion Assembly thingies on the rockers. The plot thickens!
