From time to time I tear myself away from my glorious retirement to deliver/pick up cars for a local leasing company. Usually I only go to Austin, Houston or San Antonio; however, last week was a little different.

On Monday of last week I flew to Miami, FL to pick up a 2000 Mercedes CLK 430. The company was buying the car to lease to a local customer. Since the car was priced some $4K less in Miami than in the DFW area, the trip was well worth it.

This Mercedes coupe was a jewel of a highway cruiser; just the kind of car for a long trip. I drove by myself straight through in 23 hours, averaging 67 mph and over 23 mpg. Not bad for a V-8, I'd say.

Well, anyway, I had a nice couple of days in Miami (actually, Coconut Grove) and a nice drive home in a great automobile. Life is good!

The CLK is a pretty nice car, but there is a major design flaw- there are major electical systems directly under the cupholder. My dad had a clk cab. and was driving to FL and coffee spilled out of his cup, shorting out the electrical systems and making the car break down on the highway in atlanta. He had a hard time trying to convince mercedes to fix it, and when they did, they never got it back to normal- it always had electical glitches after that. But the worst part of the ordeal... when the car broke down in ATL, they gave him a CADILLAC loaner
