I'm not talking about rock crawling, but perhaps a trail that requires some ground clearance and 4wd.

Just watch out for the spark plug blow out issue with the 5.4’s. I had an expedition (2002 with 180k miles) that I bought for $1300. It lasted me 2 years and 50k of driving before I junked it. Needed new ball joints, brakes, tires, tuneup, shocks, and an electrical short. I didn’t think it was worth putting in over 2k into it so I donated it.

5.4L engines also have issues with the cam phasers/sensors.

Gen3 (2007-2017) Expedition 5.4 engines don't seem to the problems of the early models which will still run well over 200K if you keep clean oil in them. Mine had over 180K when I replaced it after 10 years of service. Late Gen3 have the 3.5 EcoBoost with a lot more flexible power than the old 5.4. Subtle transmission change in 2008 so that's be my earliest to consider used. I'm seeing used 2017s with 40K miles priced at 50% of original MSRP.

What do you want to tow? Btw towing is the most controversial topic in the world.

I suggest to call Can Am RV in Canada. The hitch setup is critical. They are experts in hitches and tow vehicles. They set up my Cayenne to tow a 30’ Airstream.

Nice. It is tough to find those in good shape. Decent price? Give us a tow report when you get some miles on the setup!

It's a 06 with 100k miles exactly, bought it from the 2nd owner who had it for 8 years. She showed up with a folder full of maintenance records all from the same dealer. New tires, new brakes. It would be tough to find a better example. I paid $13k.

I found it on Craigslist, and I called right away. While we were doing the transaction, people were blowing her phone up, interested in the car. Apparently some guy was circling the parking lot just in case I didn't buy it.
