The more powerful Miata is coming - 181hp in 2019

Also in the deal is a higher redline - 7,500. Almost S2k territory?

I think this is almost exactly what the car needs; can't wait to test drive one.

Also, I guess this leaves the 124 Spyder in the lurch? Wonder what upgrades it may get, if they're tied to the Miata still, or if it will continue to be overpriced and under-powered...

This is exciting. I'm anxious to see how the bump in power feels. With the extra power are they planning to stiffen up the suspension to reduce some of that body roll? Maybe on a Club trim? We'll see.

I don't think they are too far off. I have been surfing one of the Miata boards, and a guy who claims to be connected to Mazda said they should start getting to Cali dealerships in the next few weeks. Looking forward to a mag review.

The S2000 being the benchmark 20 years later goes to show how special the car truly is. Another factor people don't appreciate is the car's reliability. I hope this version ND doesn't have the same transmission problems, although the heavier flywheel will help.

I haven't mathed it out, but the ND1 was underrated from the factory and this has an extra 700rpm before redline. Since HP is a function of torque does it actually make any more power or is it just because of the raised rev limit and less underrating?

Either way, I am happy to see this and I can see one for me in the future. That, and building a S1 Supermiata has really been calling me lately.

I've really been looking at NDs a lot lately (used). I think this new version would make a lot of sense to get a few "new car" features without breaking the bank and adding a bit more speed. This car should be about as quick as an S2000, overall, I would think.

Still, a Club model is pushing $34K (?) now, before discounts. That's a chunk of change for a car with relatively low power. Still, I'm in it for fun, not for speed (necessarily) but it's a little tough to swallow when a Mustang GT or Camaro SS is available for similar money.

Sounds good. But, I have never warmed up to the styling of the car. I won't be too tempted.

Yeah I can't say I'm a fan of the current Miata either. I'd be far more tempted to go with the Afla version if it gets the same bump in power, or more, but they don't share engines so that may be unlikely.

I'm just glad someone- anyone- is still making a manual shift, back to basics, fun and modifiable roadster still- the extra power is a bonus. We'll argue about how it compares to our s2000's forever, but honda left us in a lurch by not continuing its production.

HP is a function of torque times rpm - so raise either and you'll get more power.
It remains to be seen what Mazda have actually done. Could be a torque increase, could be just a rev increase, or both, could be nothing and just an on-paper increase, could be there actually isn't a new Miata. We'll see.
