New 400hp SLK AMG, the MB CSL/CS
http://www.mbworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=125312
A new 400hp performance package version of the MB SLK 55 AMG is coming out (currently only for the European market). Lots of carbon fiber, revised door interior (simpler, just like in the CS), new sporty seats, faster shifting, possibly a 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds!
No definitive news on what MB will call this performance version of the SLK, but it seems like the extra power increase and lighter car will result in a pretty quick ride.
They've also revised the shifting (yes, still an automatic, but you can always get Brabus to fit a manual) for 50% quicker shifts then the already quicker sport mode, and the steering wheel now has paddles, rather then "buttons" to change gears.
As an MB fan, I say "it's about time". Now if they could just make a manual gearbox that takes 400hp/600nm of punishment.

You know the new 5.5L motor going into the S500 makes 380hp. So, just tweak a few little things and you have 400hp easy. The old 5.5L AMG motor is old school now at 355hp.

The new 5.5 liter engine is quite different from the older one (found in the SLK 55 AMG). It is a non-amg engine using 4 valves per cylinder (the old one was 3). The two engines cannot be compared.
When you say "just tweak a few little things and you have 400hp easy", it's actually not quite as easy as this. The only way to get 400hp 'easy' is to swap the headers (8 hour labor for fitting a $4000 piece) and possibly an ECU remap (anonther $1-2k). I should know, I have the SLK 55 AMG and have done extensive research on the engine and tuning options available for it (unfortunately, MB tuning is expensive). If one can spend over $10k, they can bolt on a supercharger, effectively making the SLK have a similar engine to the SL55...
The tweaks from AMG for the new performance package takes advantage of the restrictive exhaust system of the SLK, it was just a very 'underexploited' engine and was used in many of their 55 AMG models (including the S class, CLK etc...). Depending on the car, it developed 360hp, give or take 5hp (of course, over time, some of the heavier MB models such as the S-class, replaced the NA 55 with a supercharged engine, giving it ~500hp).
Besides, the next S500 will probably be named S550.

What I was implying, Shinigami, is that the new 32 valve 5.5L MB motor has much more potential (I would imagine!) than the old 24 valve 5.5L AMG motor. So, I thought the new 400hp SLK55 would have the new 32 valve motor with a few factory tweaks to get it to 400hp. Should be very easy for MB to extract another 20hp from the new motor.

Oh, I see what you meant.
No, the SLK 55 AMG has to use the AMG engine, i.e. 24valve one. The 550 engine is an MB produced one, using their new 32valve technology.
If they put the new 55 engine into it, the car would no longer be an AMG.
But MB did this already with the SL, producing the 600 in house, and then AMG fired back with the 65.
The rumors (as there always are) goes that the 63 engine will find its way into the SLK 3 years from now during the facelift (which occurs halfway through the model line).

although on a "from the factory" motor, the AMG 5.5 liter has more potential than the S500's new 32 valve 5.5 liter due to the fact that the AMG block is reinforced and has full forged internals...
the 63 will probably be released in 2 variants... "big boy" for the current s/c amg's and "little boy" for the current n/a amg unless they go to another motor for the n/a cars...
the 400hp bump your seeing on the SLK and im sure soon on the C55 is in anticipation of the new RS4 and M3 coming out in the next 2 years in the US market...
im also waiting for a manual amg from merc... heck just buy the best from getrag like bmw does

True, true...
The AMG 55 engine should take up to 600hp of punishment according to Kleemann.
Also, MB has registered the trademark names of 69 (SL69, S69, etc...), so the 69 engine might be a 63 with a supercharger, or a new 6.9 liter engine which pushes 600hp. Who knows.

Looks really sweet.
Why would a header swap take 8 hours. Short of having to unbolt & shift the engine there is no reason header swaps should take this long. I have seen them in numerous cars. While people say it is difficult, on a lift it is just taking out a few bolts, gaksets, & voila.

mercedes...and audi...are all moving away from forced induction ... (the V12's are an exception) .. if there's a 69... it will definitly be N/A... perhaps the 69 will be a V12 to replace the turbo's...

Why is everyone moving away from forced induction? In a way, I think the supercharged 5.5L motor is better than the new 6.2L NA motor, certainly from a modifying standpoint.
