New generation of big ass convertibles...
I was thinking that as years go by, new cars would come out that would make me less enthusiastic about S2000, and eventually replace it at some point.
But the exact opposite is happening. All the manufacturers are competing to bring out the heaviest hardtop convertibles with the huge asses...
Check out the Infiniti G convertible, and the new Lexus IS convertible... And how about that first fat ass Ferrari?

All cars are getting bigger, period. I have an Acura Rl sedan that Ive parked next to the new Challenger, which has dwarfed my car. I couldn't believe it. Shouldn't a sports coupe be smaller than a full size luxury sedan?

Those cars that literally have giant asses are mostly folding hard-tops. They need the big tail to stuff the top into. They are also 4-seaters, which means the top is much larger and again takes more room. They are marketed more as "grand tourers" than sports cars.
The S2000 still competes primarily with the Miata on the low end and the Boxster/Z4 on the high end, and the 370Z/RX-8 for hard-tops. One could argue the Z4 has gotten far less desirable to the enthusiast driver in its latest redesign, but the same cars will still be cross-shopped with the S2000 as before. The G and IS will be aimed more at middle-aged women.

I think the point of this thread is that with the discontinuation of the S2000, there is no other good handling, nimble little sport cars in the same category. Perhaps if they boosted the performance of the MX-5 some more it would take over the nitch left by the S2000.
