IMHO, the perfect car would be an RX-8 with the Mazdaspeed3 engine powering the rear wheels. The rotary in the RX-8 is too weak for the car, and the engine in the MS3 is way too strong for fwd.
It would be called a mazdaspeed mx5.

I always felt they should have done that, but I guess the RX designation makes it a sin to put anything other than a rotary in it?

I don't know the exact dimensions, but I think the RX8 is roomier than the MX5 (and that's not considering the back seat alone). Driving dynamics would also be different. And then there's the hard top only configuration.
The RX-8 has tons of interior room but surprisingly little headroom. In my car I have a lot more head room then in my dad's RX-8 and I'm 6'1".

Having said all that in defense of the purported new RX-7 -- the thing that kills me about the RX-8 that I assume the RX-7 will share is the lack of torque. When most people say they want a fast car, they mean they want a car that goes when they step on the gas regardless of where they are in the rev band, and the RX-8 fails miserably in that department -- even though it's fairly quick, it never feels quick due to the lack of torque.
You're absolutely right. The reason that I bought an S2k is because of the tremendous torque it puts out.

Have you ever driven an RX-8? It makes the S2000 feel like a torque monster.

haha sad but true, the RX-8 not only outweighs an S2k by a few hundred pounds, its shy about 20 lb ft of torque for most of the rev range, it all adds up to a car that really feels anemic.

Thought you were talking about an rx7 type car with the 4 banger turbo, my mistake.

For some reason this thread reminds me of ZX-10. I miss him.

Last time I checked, the S2000 and RX-8 had almost identical torque and hp numbers, and they're about equal in acceleration and track times. The only reason you'd feel less torque is because the rotary engine is so much smoother imo. It needs to be driven high in the rpm range, much more so than an AP1 though.
