The motor actually sounds rather similar in spec and design to the Ecotec turbo (2.0L, twin scroll, DI). With a good turbo setup these I4s might live up to the claims that people had for turbos starting in the 1980s, V6 power, I4 mileage.
one could argue that they already have. take even the plain vanilla 2.0t from VW it has performance that would blow most all 6cly motors prior to 2000 out of the water. sure v6's are getting better, but motors in general are getting far more efficient and powerful at the same time.

Twin scroll turbo a la BMW, low compression ratio and 274 hp, 34 mpg. That is nuts.

If an SE is $23k, what do you think a turbo version would be, $26k?
CEO Krafcik says Turbo will come in at "less than $25,000 nicely equipped."

Turbo Price

I think I found my next DD.

I thought the absence of a higher power engine was a bit suspect considering all of its competitors offers one.

^ IIRC this is the reason the sonata is so light for it's class size- from the beginning engineers designed the car for a 4cyl and a turbo 4 rather than a v6. not having to incorporate physically much larger v6 has shaved a few pounds.

This is true - lighter frame that doesn't have to support a heavier engine.

There are three trim levels for the regular car, $20, 23 and 25k I think. So if the turbo bumps them all up a bit, I wonder what final pricing would be like.

Meh MazdaSpeed 6 made the exact same amount of power 5 years ago and it offered a manual.

And it wasn't front wheel drive like this Hyundai.
