The motor actually sounds rather similar in spec and design to the Ecotec turbo (2.0L, twin scroll, DI). With a good turbo setup these I4s might live up to the claims that people had for turbos starting in the 1980s, V6 power, I4 mileage.

I thought the absence of a higher power engine was a bit suspect considering all of its competitors offers one.

^ IIRC this is the reason the sonata is so light for it's class size- from the beginning engineers designed the car for a 4cyl and a turbo 4 rather than a v6. not having to incorporate physically much larger v6 has shaved a few pounds.
