Audi says they are also developing direct injection gas engines, starting with the 3.1 L in the new A6. Mercedes is doing similar development, too.

BMW doesn't tune for peak power...they tune for area-under-the-curve. So there is thrust at all RPMs. So while the peak might not be as high in this example, the fact that the car was pulling earlier in each gear made up for it.

I have to go with what steve c said on the linked thread. Even the calculator page itself says "Please bear in mind that these calculators are approximations only." Two immediately obvious omissions are driveline loss and aerodynamic drag. That calculator's a fun toy, but it doesn't prove anything.
