Audi says they are also developing direct injection gas engines, starting with the 3.1 L in the new A6. Mercedes is doing similar development, too.

BMW doesn't tune for peak power...they tune for area-under-the-curve. So there is thrust at all RPMs. So while the peak might not be as high in this example, the fact that the car was pulling earlier in each gear made up for it.
