I will say that the 997 interior looks alot better than the 996's.
996 Interior
Get rid of the phone, nav, and painted center consol (all options) and it works for me.

I wasn't just talking about the crappy interior but also the fact that almost all their cars, including 997C, 997CS, 997C4, 997C4S, Boxster, Boxster S, Cayman S and soon the Turbo will all have the same interior. If you're paying 100k for a 997 S you would think you would at least get a better interior then the 40k Boxster. Both interior are identical to the tee.
Now when I say crappy, I was at the Dealer sitting in the 997 and pushed the cupholder on the passenger side to slide out and it never went back in. The interior looks good on pics but go sit in one and tell me if it as nice once you touch it.

- 997 gets additional gauges
- different vents
- different trim levels (997 gets standard features that are optional on 987)
If you drive them you will notice that there are literally hundreds of differences. I would agree the basic layout and look is similar. I would also agree that they share many parts and materials. However, they are far from identical.
