Knowing Ferrari, its curb weight won't be anywhere near 2,800 lbs. Nevertheless, I want one. Haha.

Ferrari's hand was forced. They just came out with this amazing new 488 tt car and it was getting SPANKED by Mclaren. A 570S was very comparable and if put against a 650s, it wasn't good at all. To be fair we should compare the 488 though to something in its same price bracket which then moves us to the 720S model and now its game over. Rumors are that the 720S is putting out power WAY over its listed spec too.
Mclaren entering the street car scene has completely changed the game plan at Ferrari. It was so much easier for them to have their rival (lamborghini) and call it good. They had the racing pedigree, the heritage, and so what if a lamborghini offered more performance at a cheaper price on certain models. Those cars were for flashy "look at me" type people anyway right? People who were actually into performance choose Ferrari which gave you looks and performance. As we know racing doesn't come cheap, and racing heritage takes decades to build up. But Mclaren. Those jerks come in with better performing cars, at cheaper prices, AND brought the "heritage racing trump card" to the table too. Now they have the cars and the racing pedegree, leaving Ferrari with just one card left, prestige. When people say "what car do you own" and you say "Ferrari" its like answering "rolex" when someone asks what sort of time pieces you own. They still do have their name recognition.
If your into all out performance from some of the top engineers in the industry how does one even consider a Ferrari over a Mclaren right now though? At this point I find only one relevant response, and that is prestige.

If you consider your Rolex analogy, it is quite easy to see why someone would take a Ferrari over McLaren. For one, resale value. Secondly there are more places and knowledge to fix a Ferrari over a McLaren. Plus the sheer sales numbers between the two. Does McLaren sell over 3K cars a year? Ferrari is around 6500 and Lamborghini is near 2K. Next is to think of warranty, ownership experience and lifestyle association of owning either marque. Ferrari has a better option of each. I am not knocking McLaren at all. Utterly beautiful cars, but if I were a consumer for either one new, the wise money is with Ferrari.

It's pretty crazy how far these type of cars have come in the past 15 years. McLaren wasn't making street cars, Lambo only had the Diablo, and the 360 Modena was putting out 395hp (and wasn't even that fast considering the power to weight), with a pretty slow F1 trans and lots of expensive maintenance.
Now, McLaren has a "standard" supercar that runs 9-second 1/4 miles, Ferrari's 360 successor has 661-711hp, and Lambo has a fire-breathing V10 Performante - and they're all utterly amazing and easy to drive.

Some good points made about McLaren, but the styling of the 720S is a bit, meh. I'm not a fan of the headlights. Ruins the whole front for me.
I'd probably pick the Performante over either the Mc or Horse these days. NA screaming V10 >>>> TT V8s.

Not a Ferrari fan here. Can't stand the ego and arrogance with the brand. I love McLaren because they build cool cars and are the antithesis of Ferrari. I would love a 675LT Spider.

The real spanking is in the market. A 5-year old 20k mile 458 fetches more money than a 3-year old 10k mile 650S.
