My former brother in law just bought a 1987 Porsche 944 Turbo with 54,001 miles at a wallet lightening price of $10,700. I think this is too much.
the car puts out 1.75 bar of boost (25.73 psi) but it has a curb weight of 3000 pounds. it's 0-60 in mags is 5.8 sec. with a top speed of around 168 mph I believe. It is black with grey interior and the previous owner brought it over from Germany where apparently he rarely ever drove it. it is in above average condition for a 15 year old car.
there has had to be some engine rebuild work because the car has not moved since january 21 1999 and just sat for three years without being cranked while the car next to it, a 1994 911 Turbo, got the owner's TLC.
Anyway, that is the history on the car. His head is about the size of the retarded cloned Kyle in that episode of SouthPark.
His reason for buying it was "to be noticed" yet when my lowered Black Miata w/ rollbar and aftermarket wheels is next to his car it get as much if not more attention. Go figure. His car may be fast, but it is very dated looking. I would never tell him this though.
What do you guys think of the 944 Porsche? Any experiences with them?

I've taken my non-turbo '85.5 944 to several area tracks for DEs and it's just a wonderful car to drive. (It's one of seven cars Porsche put together for the Firestore Firehawk race series.) The handling is absolutely amazing. Very little power (only 150 or so hp) but much faster than my stock tired S2000 around a course. It was sold a few months ago to fund the purchase and buildup of an '86 Turbo to Porsche Club GT3 specs. (Over 300hp, about 2200lbs.) It'll be wicked fast.
I'm no authority, but my understanding is that a stock '87 Turbo should be about 220hp and 2800lbs. Simple mods will take a stock car to just about 300hp, more requires opening up the engine. $10k seems a bit steep to me, though. We got our Turbo for around $3000. (Not in the best of condition, but not that we cared.)

A turbo S can be made to put out > 300hp with little effort
I drove 85 944 (non-turbo), I loved it. It had big brakes and
great steering with no vices that I noticed. The hatch back
even gave you some utility.
Nice car.
I would have bought a 944 Turbo if it was offered as
a targa. I know about the convertible, but it wasn't
offerd with the turbo.

The 944 is a great car, though expensive to maintain. After about two years of ownership I sold my '87 944S (16 valve NA) for down payment money on the S2K. My average maintenace costs were over $250/month.
Perhaps my styling preferences tend towards the "dated" but in a lot of ways I think it's as good, thought different looking than the S2000. Better brake and steering feel, even if the performance was a notch below the S2K. Quiet, good storage space, huge gas tank, and a semi-useful back seat in a pinch. After 13 years the paint was arguably in better shape than the S2K's after 2 years...
Hopefully your friends' head will shrink a bit over time. If it helps any, be sure to remind him that the 944, like the 924, is really an Audi - after they abandoned the project Porsche picked it up and finished it. The cars were built on Audi's production lines, not alongside the 911 in Stuttgart.
Ah, but I do miss her...

944 Turbo are great car, using tranaxle (transmission in the back) to get better balance and handling.
i have no experience of 944 Turbo, but one of my relative have a 968 cabriolet in Hong Kong, which I think that car performance very well and looks very good too.

the best 944 is the rarest 1989 version with the blaunpunk deck with the wider wheels and the side body kit.
i think this is the rarest 944 and the last year for the turbo. i had one and it was very quick. i think it had 275 hp i think, i am not sure, but i loved it when i had it.

I bought my 944(non-turbo) new in 85 and I still have it.
Great car
While the 944 was built in an Audi factory and most parts are Audi the motor is all Porsche. It is half of a 928 motor.

I've owned three Porsche 944's the latest one a 944 Turbo. They are great cars, perfectly balanced. Superb steering feel. The Turbo packs more of an immediate wallop when the turbo kicks in at 3800 rpm than my S2000 but overall the turbo feels more sluggish, more muscular than nimble. Very heavy clutch, very little power assist to the steering, a nice gearbox but can't hold a candle to an S2000 gearbox. But for $10k if you find a real clean one with a complete service history you can;t get more bang for the buck and as far as upgrades are concerned there is no limit. 300-350 horsepower is easily acheived and if your pockets are deep enough 400 -500 hp is not at all out of the question.
