Default RWD vs FWD in Xfer of HP to wheels

Which model tends to be more efficent in terms of Horsepower transfered to the wheels, front wheel drive or rear wheel drive. In other words, which platform loses more HP.

RWD (probably) loses more hp as the power has to travel longer before it gets to the wheels

A very rough rule of thumb on drivetrain losses:
FWD: 10%
RWD: 15%
AWD: 20%

I was always taught RWD loses the least.

AWD is more like 25%-30%. It's a HP whore!

It depends on where the engine is, not just whetther FWD or RWD. RWD that has an engine in the middle (or the back) will loose the least power to the wheels. Also it depends on the orientation of the engine as some cars have the engine facing norths/south and some east/west.

Though, general rule is that the closer the engine to the driving wheels the better. Also having the driveshaft in the same orientation as the axel is benefitial.

FF and MR setups generally have the least amount of power loss, folowed by FR, then followed way back by AWD.

You didn't ask about chain drive versus shaft drive...

Count the number of 90 degree turns the power has to make for each configuration and that will give you an idea.
