"better" is subjective and depends what you want.
I went from an S to a 335i sport package and I hear ya on a lot of the points you make. However, it all depends what is important to you.
I wouldn't say the 335i is a better car if I want to go balls out and just have fun, but it is a better car in many other ways. I looked into the E46's, but I need 4 doors so the M was out.

An E46 M3 is deffinitely my next car. The only colors I really want are white with red interior or Laguna seca blue. Those are the hardest to find it seems and I want one under 50k miles.

Yeah they barely began making 4 door m3s...but still iono if that was the right choice for bmw..eh..I guess some people need them..but Ive always been...get 4 door for what you need when you need. Then 2 door sport coupe for any other time ohh yeeeah
