Talk me in to/out of Chevy Volt

He's not buying a new Leaf so it won't go from $20k to $7k in 3 years. The Volt will be around $13k resale in 3 years. So he could drive new Volt for about the same as a used Leaf. I think the Volt is a more flexible formula, 50 miles of electric range satisfies most of your daily needs, and you have no range anxiety, just gas up and drive as far as you want.
Once you live with a hybrid and begin to appreciate the benefits you'll start driving it more than you expect. Quiet hi-torque electric power and super low fuel costs are addicting. Keep a sports car for fun, use your DD like a disposable appliance that gets great fuel economy. Many Volt owners go 1000+ miles without having to add gas.

Yeah I don't think people are getting the idea that if I buy the car, with incentives, discounts and tax credit I will be paying around $22k for the car. I almost forgot my wife's corporate incentive which after we pay income tax on the incentive still nets $1500 so about $20,500 for the car. If I could only get $13k for it at the end of 3 years that would be way better than the lease, but it would be the beater for about 10 with free fuel. It could depreciate to $0 and still be a pretty good deal. That is less than $200 a month, free fuel and virtually no maintenance. If it is worth $5000 at the end of it, that is $129 per month.
When you start breaking the cost down like you did above, you know what you're doing. My lease, was always cheaper than my payment to me due to no fuel costs. I'm past the buy/trade crap. Depreciation doesn't mean shit to me any more. I've worked hard to change. What I buy, I keep.

I am still taking a wait and see approach with this and need to be convinced by the dealer with an awesome price, but I googled Nissan Leaf and in Minnesota, Xcel energy is offering some $10,000 incentive on 2017 Leafs for people in their service territory plus I think a 240v home charger. If someone were in the market for one, I assume you have to pay at or near sticker, but add the $7500 tax credit and that is a cheap second car for people.
