That's why, despite having an E90 M3, which actually got the same time as the 997.2 C2S at Lightning Lap in the same year, I still lust for a 997 C2S. Performance is similar and the M3 is a great car, but the 911 just had more feel and was more engaging. It's a real sports car vs. a sports sedan.

But I'd imagine the C4 with the awd will mute the steering feel. The car I liked more than the 997? The Cayman. The one I drove was a 2007 base model, so bottom of the rung. But damn, the way the car rotates with the throttle and how it turns-in is something amazing, the pure physics of being mid-engine. Driving the 997, I could feel the rear engine hanging out there and didn't particularly care for it. Maybe the 991.2 with rear steering fixes that feel.
I've got a few years worth of seat time in the 987, and I'm still very happy with the way it handles. I drove a 991.1 c2 (non S) a couple of years back, and found it a little underwhelming, to be honest. Motor seemed way too quiet, and in the 7-spd manual, you really had to get on it to feel like it had much power. It just didn't feel eager at all. I deliberately got it sideways while turning on damp pavement. Nothing scary but you can really feel all that mass hanging out back - huge difference from the mid-engine feel I'm used to. I also had the opportunity to drive a 991 Targa 4S earlier this year. Open top, so it sounded great, and the blip shifting manual makes you feel (sound?) like a hero while driving it. I didn't drive it hard enough to feel out the handling dynamics, but I do remember the steering being a bit lighter than my 987. That was a really nice car though...

And then last month I went for a ride (not drive) in a friend's 991.2 Turbo. With upgraded turbos, meth injection, and a PDK. It's putting down 800+ hp, and ran a 10.2 on street tires at PBIR. From a stop with launch control, it is violence and insanity like I have never experienced. I was looking for something to grab ahold of. Launch control allows a tiny bit of wheel slip up to about 30mph before it fully hooks up, then it shoves you into the back of the seat ever harder. I know MT recently measured almost 1.3g of acceleration force in a stock Turbo S, which exceeds even a Tesla in ludicrous mode. This car is up probably 250hp on a stock Turbo S. It reminded me a little bit of getting shot out of the gamma ray gun on the Hulk coaster at Universal Orlando.

That sounds like an absolute blast
