Toyota 1.2L Turbo
I always love these cutaway animations of new tech, especially in the engine world. Being as its Toyota, this will likely not see use in an interesting light weight RWD platform type car, or in a car with 3 pedals either. And all that cool tech will be wasted on the OAP's buying the car this is destined for. Still, cool stuff.

Cool, thanks for sharing. I noticed at about 1:17 that it appear that cylinders seem to fire in pairs, 1,4 and then 2,3. I had never seen that before. I wonder what the advantage is.

Cylinders 1 and 4 travel together, but they're at opposite ends of the cycle. So while cylinder 1 is at TDC and about to ignite a compressed charge, 4 is also at TDC but just finished exhausting and is about to take in a new charge.

Ahhh, I should have watched the valves.

Most even number cylinder engines these days have companion cylinders, which are 360-degrees out-of-phase (remember 720-degrees or TWO full revolutions per ignition). If you take the firing order of an engine, eg: 1-3-4-2... then 1 and 4 are 360-degrees out-of-phase and appear to be traveling is sync. Same with 3 and 2.

I think Honda has some of the best turbo technology going right now. I've got their 1.5 l turbo in my 2016 Civic and it works extremely well, and is actually under-rated on power compared to what we are seeing on dyno's and performance tests. I ended up getting the CVT tranny with paddle shifters, as my wife and son will be driving it, despite only having two peddles it doesn't give up anything in terms of performance or fuel economy over the 6 speed manual version, pretty impressive really.
The Atkinson cycle has been tossed around for years by other manufactures, Mazda was using it over 15 years back or more, I can't remember if Honda has dabbled with it too, I seem to recall seeing it somewhere on one of their model lineups. Not sure I'd like to go as small as 1.2 l like the Corolla has, the 1.5 l turbo from Honda is probably as small as I would want to go, perfect blend of performance and fuel economy and longevity. Check out the videos and links below, interesting stuff.
