Toyota recalls 345,000 Sienna minivans
Seat belts may not perform properly during a crash, regulators say. Mazda also recalls RX8s.

July 21, 2005: 11:06 AM EDT DETROIT (Reuters) - Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 345,443 Sienna minivans in the United States because of defective seat belts that may not properly restrain passengers during a crash, U.S. regulators said.

The vehicles involved are from the 2004-2005 model years, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Separately, NHTSA said Mazda Motor Corp. is recalling 27,800 2004 model-year RX8 cars as cracks may occur in the ball joint socket due to improper forging of the lower control arm.

In severe driving conditions, the ball may separate from the socket and a loss of steering may occur, which could result in a crash, NHTSA said.

That RX-8 just got worse. First the higher HP output than stated, now this...

I honestly don't see why anyone would buy that car. Horrible MPG first off. It's not as fast, it burns oil like crazy, and there are way better cars for the money.

People profess that you can actually use the backseat, but you might as well get a STi/Evo for that money and have 4 doors.

Personally if I didn't like the S2000 I would have gotten the 350z for my RWD fix over a RX-8.

I know it handles good, but it just doesn't justify for the other aspects of the car that lower it in my eyes.

I'm sure I'll get flamed, but since I'm not at a Honda forum, I hope it's not too bad.

Why does anyone buy any car? Personal taste.

While most of what you say is very true, especially the milage thing, lots would argue about better cars for the money. I chose an S2000 but I am single no kids.

I am not going to buy one, my brother might. While I thought the magazine pictures were butt ugly, in some colors I think the car looks fantastic. Having owned a rotary before, the sound can be intoxicating like the S2000. To some they look good, they can haul a couple kiddies when needed, they are sporty to drive and they are unique. To lots of folks that makes a great car.

I bet if I drove an Evo it might be the funnest car I have ever driven. Might make me grin from ear to ear, but I could not bring myself to drive something that looks like that. That goes double for an STI. It is a souped up economy car. A tremendous performing souped up economy car, but still a souped up economy car. Trust me I appreciate what they can do and I smile when I see them because I know the driver has a beast under his right foot. The fact that the guy next to me has a car that is faster does not make me mad, I don't care if the occasional car can blow my doors off. Someone will always be faster.

Not everyone buys based on outright performance, othewise toyota would have never sold a single Corolla, which for its purpose is a fantastic car. This was not meant as a flame, just my $.02 on why people choose an RX8.

I'm a bit surprised at the RX-8 recall. My family and I have more experience with Mazda than any other car company, and I have nothing but complete respect for their quality.

I guess if it was a GM model that was being recalled, we'd be discussing why all their stuff is crap and they can't do anything right. But since it's Toyota...............
