What’s Your Favorite Year for Cars?
Mine is around 2008. I like manuals and natural aspiration. My choices here are admittedly subjective and limited either what I know or dream about.
Honda. The S2000 is near the end but still available. (Honda’s peak may be earlier when it had the 2Sk, NSX and some good Civics.) Lotus Elise. BMW. Is this company’s best year ever? Introduces the E9x M3 with V8. The E46 M3 is gone but it’s engine is going strong in the Z4M coupe and roadster. (I havent driven the V10 M5. I’d like to buy not necessarily own one) They also introduce an awesome budget car, my favorite non-M, the 128i with the lightweight I6 N52. If boost and tuning is you’re thing the twin-turbo I6 in the x35i cars cars are an option. For a few grand in mods you can have 500hp in an unassuming family sedan. Porsche is in full swing on 997 having improved the interiors from the 996. The Cayman was introduced a few years earlier and the Boxster is now in its second generation. NA flat sixes and three pedals abound. I believe the IMS bearing issue is gone. Ferrari F430. The last mid-engine manual they may ever do. America doesnt look so great around the time of the Great Recession. Arguably its peak is right now for the mustang, Camaro, and Corvette C7/8. What year do you like and which cars? |
Having owned mainly Hondas I rather like the late 90's and early 2000's up to about 2003, after that I think things went south for the most part (with exception of the S2000).
I bought a couple SRT-4's in the mid 2000's and I really like what the SRT group was doing at Chrysler in that time period, not only did they form this cool automotive division but the engineers got out there and attended car events and openly chatted on car forums , and the SRT group set up track days where people could test drive their cars on many tracks around the country. That was a very cool time. |
That’s a tough question. I like a lot of different stuff but less and less of the newer cars. I would have to say 70’s and 80’s |

The pinnacle of Japanese sporty cars. My favorite car was the MR2 Turbo, but Toyota also offered a Supra and Celica, there was an FD RX7 and Miata from Mazda, Nissan had a 300zx and 240sx, Honda offered the Prelude and crappy Del Sol. There were also Corvettes, Mustangs, Camaros, and an affordable Porsche 968 at the time. You could buy a Dodge Daytona with a V6 and a stick. A Mitsubishi 3000gt or Dodge Stealth. You also had some good BMW models too. Did I forget WRX Sti's, and Mistsubishi Eclipse's? And of course the Lambo killing GEO STORM!!!!!!!! And all of them came with, drumroll.......................a manual transmission option. SUV's and Crossovers are the big thing now, but early 90's was all about sporty cars. If you wanted a sports car, you had a ton to choose from, and most were affordable. Even the car magazines wrote articles about sports cars instead of CUV and econobox comparison tests. It was glorious. |

It's fun to think about what would have happened if the recession had not come about. Honda for one was working on an FR platform, likely a V8, and a V10 NSX replacement (although I was not a fan of the front-engined design). All that got scrapped due to the economy. If you look at what Me and the Wife own, it's easy to see what generation we are. Of the five cars we have 3 are early 2000, one 96 and one 2011. 4 of 5 fit in my favorite category. I look at the late 90's and the early 2000's as my favorite car years.
R33 and R34 Skylines, MR2 turbo's, Lancer Evo's VII and VIII. Supra's, STI, FD RX7's, S15's Then there's C5's and Gen1 and 2 Vipers. McLaren F1's, Lamborghini Countach and Diablos. XJ220, Saleen S7. Yeah 95-05 is my Car decade. |
1987 - They heyday for the Buick Grand National being the fastest production car in the US. It was the king of the streets in my area and every "same vintage" Camaro Z28, Trans Am, Corvette and Mustang GT feared these cars. Glad to have owned 3 of these Buicks.

When it comes to the most beautiful cars ever made, in my opinion this was during the 60's to beginning 70's. Top examples are the 1964 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso, 1970 Aston Martin DBS Vantage, 1967 Toyota 2000GT, 1965 Maserati Sebring, 1969 Lamborghini Miura and Islero, 1967 Ford GT350, 1965 Corvette Stingray, Datsun 240z, BMW E9, Fiat Dino coupe.....the list goes on and on. Cars never looked this good before this period and haven't looked this good since. This is quite a while before I was born but I love this era. During this time period you also had some amazing 4x4's such as Toyota FJ40, Jeep CJ and full size Jeeps, etc.
Now, another time period that is very memorable for me is the mid 90's to early 2000's lane_viper pointed out. Especially because of all the amazing Japanese sports cars that were at attainable prices. |
Tough to call but I'm going to go with mid-1992 to mid-1993.
- tail end of Ferrari F40 - Porsche 959 second run - Schuppan and Dauer 962s (road-going Porsche 962) - Jaguar XJ220 - start of McLaren F1 - Nisan Skyline R32 GTR, Z32 300ZX - Toyota JZA80 Supra - Honda NSX, Civic EG6 SiR - changeover period between Ford Sierra and Escort Cosworths - Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution - Subaru Impreza WRX - BMW E36 M3, E34 M5 - Audi S2, S4, V8 ...etc |
