There's no shortage of sports car in that price range. Of course they will all be used cars, but there's so many options. If it were me and I was replacing the S, I might test drive an Evo, but I cant be certain I'd buy one or not.

DAMN good idea (even though it's ugly/goofy-looking)! Though, it will still probably be a bit over $30K (but well worth it).

I think about the car everyday. Its definitely my next purchase. Now the question is should I wait for the performance version of it? Nah, I'll trade up if anything.

I'm in the same shoes as you and am leaning towards a Boxster S or a turbo S2000.
Try and find a 2005 Boxster S, it's just a perfect car that does everything well and you can put the top down to hear the engine scream behind your ears!
Only 280HP, but at 2900 pounds, it's pretty quick.

Personally? I'd check out the upcoming TSX. If I could keep the S, I'd rather pay off our current cars and buy a winter beater with the rest than buy a new $30k car.
I own an Evo and have driven the C5 Z06. The Z06 is faster and better track car, the evo is much more usable especially where you might have bad weather or need back seats. They are very different. Drive both and see what you like.
I liked the grunt and handling of the Z06, but the evo has much better steering feel. Evo's make decent track cars, but the Z06 is a better choice for something like that, IMO. But, I really do like my evo and feel it's a great all-around car for ~$30k.

$30K for a car... i would buy a used Lotus Elise, as a play thingy maybe track.
it is still debatable if this car, even after a few year depreciation, is still functional at the track because of expected higher frequency of maintenance, the level of difficulty in doing the work and cost of doing that maintenance.
