i also always part at the end of a row at work, and at malls, or any other shopping area because withing the 1st month of owning my car i had already gotten scratches on my pasenger side door i had to have buffed out. the same things happens to me when i park in the middle of nowere. i come out, and i see all these open spots and some shitbox is right next to me. i would recomend taking up two parking spaces as were i live i know people, just to be jerks would do something like park close to me or key my car. stupid rednecks in NE.

I just realy don't understand the lack of concern for other peoples property. I know that if there is a nice car parked somewhere out of the way, someone loves their car and goes through the effort to keep it safe by parking far away. Why not give them their space? There are a lot of parking spaces in the lot, and I don't need to be right on his door. And as for the peole who open thier door on other peoples cars with out caring, it seems as if it's the American mentality, "If it didn't hurt my stuff, why should I care?"
I guess this is how they vent their frustration.
My friend had his SL500 keyed while he was out on his boat (sixty-something foot SeaRay) one day. He said at first he was really pissed off, but then he realized he could pay to have it fixed and not even care how much it cost, so it didn't bother him anymore.

It seems like no matter what, if I park on the opposite end of the parking lot, I'll find some POS parked next to me.
Now, I'm a lot more selective of where I park. For example, I usually look for "employee parking" areas at the mall, restaurants, or grocery stores. From working retail in high school I know that employees are supposed to park off to the side or end of the parking lot. Since they're usually working longer than I'll be there, I'm usually well protected.
Otherwise, I try to park next to more expensive cars or "enthusiast" cars. For example, someone in a Z06 is probably going to be more careful getting into their car than someone in a work truck.
I never take up two spaces. I know taking up two spaces really pisses some people off, even if it's at the far end of a parking lot. IMO, nothing screams "key me" like someone parked across two spaces.
YMMV

I came out of work (a church, btw) to find some guy sitting on the hood of my car, then about a month old. I politely asked him why he was sitting on someone else's car, and as he jumped off the car, I looked and sure enough there was a nice scratch from the button on the back of his jeans. He starts yelling that he didnt' scratch it, and I ask his buddy to see if there's blue paint on his button. His buddy says yup there is.
So I ask him to come into my office and provide some sort of credit card or payment information so I can get it repainted, since the car is brand new and this was obviously his fault. He tells me to F* off and walks away.
Next day, my car is keyed from front to back. !?!?!?!?! So it's his fault, and in response to getting called on it, he decides to completely trash my car???? Had a death warrant out for him for awhile after that. Well not really, but one of my buddies did find where he worked (obviously in that immediate area to be there twice in a week) and let me know that that dude's tire stems had been mysteriously missing one day, and the whole truck was parked illegally and towed another day... after that I didn't drive my car to work for about six months, took my old car instead to avoid escalation (and besides I wanted to keep my new paint fresh, so she stayed in the garage a lot).
