Thumbs up Wholesale Auction Prices

Is there any way to find out current wholesale prices for cars? I just found out that through a friend I can get any car I'd like (if I'm patient) at wholesale auction prices for a small fee. Problem is I have no way of knowing what the prices are like. I can contact the guy who will be doing the actual buying but I don't want to be constantly bothering him. In particular I'm interested in S2000 wholesale prices (especially MY06).

Wholesale auctions I have been to don't usually have cars like the s2k, but rather hard to sell vehicles heavily discounted. See a lot of late model luxury SUVS and the like on the top end, and as for cheap stuff, no such guide really - you can see anything.

Do you know which auction he goes to? Certain auction sites have their weekly report available on their lobby for people to grab. For example, there is an auction site near Dulles, VA (they used to be called ABC but they have a new name now) where they have the previous week's market report available for pickup in their lobby every Wednesday. If you leave in VA then you can try this place. If not, search for an auction location where you can grab the market report. Usually you don't have to have the dealer license to access the lobby.

Hope this helps.

Most dealers go by Black Book prices, but you have to be a dealer to subscribe to it. Also Manheim market report helps, though I find it flawed sometimes as the results can be skewed by a bad batch of cars.

Black Book prices for '06 S2000 with 24k miles:

Black Book Wholesale
Extra Clean // Clean // Average // Rough
Base $21,900 $20,900 $19,900 $18,100
Options $0 $0 $0 $0
Mileage Adj. $0 $200 $300 $0
Total $21,900 // $21,100 // $20,200 // $18,100

Black Book Retail
Extra Clean // Clean // Average // Rough
Base $25,425 $24,225 $22,825 $20,800
Options $0 $0 $0 $0
Mileage Adj. $0 $200 $300 $0
Total $25,425 // $24,425 // $23,125 // $20,800

For somebody to wholesale an 06 S2000, there would have to be something wrong with it. The car is still worth too much to be thrown to an auction. I used to go to a few of the Manheim group auctions pretty regularly, they have one in Bordentown, NJ and Belair, MD, and in the 2 years that I went I only saw 3 S2000s. One was a 2001 on the hook, dragging the front bumper because they picked up the rear tires, my guess is blown diff, went for $6000. A 2002 red that was riced out pretty good, but it looked and sounded straight, went for $12,000. A high mileage 2000 that looked like a daily driver but had a full dealer history in the secret compartment, the only fault I saw was the yellowing of the plastic back window, went for $9000. Most of the time an 06 S2K would be sold to a local used car dealer, sold on the lot with warranty, or done as an internet sale, wholesaling a car like this is usually a last resort or they don't know what it is.

Black book is what dealers use when they appraise used cars.
