German cars scare me. If it were a trouble free/under warrantee ownership and plan to sell when that is up it would be a consideration. Long term ownership like a Japanese car would not be in my scope. Parts generally cost twice as much.

And just look at the prices of 5-10 year old used GTI's. In 5 years the Si will be worth nearly twice as much and still be reliable. Plus, numbers don't tell the whole story. The Si might be as fun to drive as the GTI, or not. You never know until you test drive one.

I don't quite buy into everyone's total German car paranoia just because there are tons of old German cars running around, I don't seem to see them littering the roadside with tow trucks pulling them everywhere, and I don't know anyone personally with German car horror stories except one guy who owned a lemon of a three series 15 years ago. I do know many owners of Volkswagons, Audis and BMW's that had great experiences with them for many years.

But I would agree the SI might be as fun to drive as the GTI partially because the car will be about 300 pounds lighter.

Where did you get that? Per C&D, a base GTI weighs 2,972lbs. A Civic EX-T sedan weighs 2,924lbs. If anything the Si will be heavier, so they should be virtually identical.

I googled "Volkswagon GTI" and google put up the 2014 stats which was a heavier car. The Civic sport tested by Motor Trend (assuming it is a similar car, same engine just more boost) was 2860 so it looks like the difference is only about one hot girlfriend worth or 110 pounds.

2972 for '17 gti fully loaded, closer to 2900 for a base.

2,864 for the EX-T manual 2017
2,895 lb (1,313 kg) (2012 Sedan) - S
The new turbo set up is heavier vs the outgoing 2.4, meaning we can expect the Si to be about the same as an EX-T or slightly heavier, making it essentially a gas tank difference between the two.

I really hope the Si is under-rated in the power department for insurance purposes, hoping its more 200/220 at the wheels close to 220/240 crank, if that's the case I would possibly consider it just for the gearbox alone.

2.0 should be 300HP and 300TQ. Everything about that video was awful.

"worth twice as much" might be a stretch but depreciation and reliability are concerning. That's what ultimately kept me from buying one.

Horsepower, horsepower, horsepower. Blah, blah, blah. My new daily is a 2008 Civic Si Mugen with around 200 HP and 139 ft lbs. I could have bought something from the same era with more horsepower, but didn't. You know why? Those cars (WRX and G35) were less engaging and less enjoyable to drive. Civic Si Mugen for the win!

What's ironic is that most of you guys are fellow S2000 owners. You know, that car with 240 HP that's STILL more fun to drive than almost all higher horsepower sports cars.
