Recommendations are specific to your geographic location. I'm from upstate NY and feel comfortable driving in deep snow. However, I now live in NoVA and know if there is any snow there will be accidents and ridiculous traffic. Our area also doesn't have the necessary equipment to handle large amounts of snow.

A couple years ago I got caught in a quick storm on the way home from work. The only highway going in my direction was completely at a standstill for over 5 hours because of accidents. So yes, staying home if you expect snow is a reasonable answer.
