Would you prefer a Cayman S or Boxster S?
Now that they have the same engine, there is less reason to prefer the Cayman S and pay extra for a coupe version. I know the Cayman is different, not as common as the Boxster.
If you were going to buy either one which would you prefer?
The Boxster S is $3,400 cheaper than the Cayman S which is a little deal, anyone spending $55K for a car should be able to spend $58K just the same. So keep in mind the price difference for the Boxster which you can use for more options or mods.
Note: I am not 100% sure the standard features ie. the Cayman S may have some features that would cost you extra to get on the Boxster S, does anyone know what if anything the Cayman S includes over and above the Boxster S standard equipment?

Only car? Cayman S.
2nd/Fun car? Boxster S.
Cayman is more beautiful, but I'm a sucker for a 'vert.
But I will say, since the Cayman/Boxster have come out, I'm still a huge Porsche fan, but the amount of my time spent daydreaming about a new Carrera has plumeted.

Cayman S for the extra edge in track performance.

The Cayman has the track performance edge over the Boxster, and not to mention an edge in styling too. They certainly are more rare than Boxsters, which seem to be a dime a dozen nowadays.
However, after saying all that, I'd still take the Boxster. What can I say, I'm a sucker for convertible roadsters!

Boxster S - I'm going to be daily driving it more than tracking it, so the top down option is worth a lot more to me. In auto-x, it's still going to be very quick and that's what I'd do the most of.
For a second car, though, I'd buy the Cayman S over the Boxster since I could just buy a different (more relaxed) convertible for daily driving and use the CS for the more hardcore driving - tracks, auto-x, etc, etc.

I like them both, but would prefer the Boxster b/c it's a vert and I'm tight with my money and it seems like a better value b/c verts are supposed to cost more. That said, I'm kind of over the vert can take it or leave it (with my S2000 it's fine but I don't live for the top down).
If they were the same price or if the Cayman was cheaper I'd probably get that instead.

I'd pick the Boxster S, especially now that the two cars share the 3.4 motor. Being able to drop the top is of value to me. For the same money as a base Cayman S, I could add PASM and bigger wheels/tires from the options list.
There isn't significant difference in track performance between the two cars. In fact, Germany's Sport Auto magazine achieved a slightly quicker Nordschleife lap time (8:23 vs 8:25) with the Boxster S. The lap time deviation was probably due to different environmental conditions, but it goes to show the two cars are pretty close.
