Is Your Daily Driver an Auto or Manual?
#13
My daily driver's are both automatics with manual shift capability.
I got rid of my 08 S2000 after 3 years. The car was a joy to drive and own but traffic where I live made it very hard to enjoy the car. My morning commute is 33.5 miles. That can take anywhere from 45 min to 2.5 hours. That's 2.5 hours of clutch, roll 10 feet in 1st gear, complete stop, repeat for 33.5 miles. It sucks. So, I started taking back roads and avoiding highways. It added 10 miles to my commute but gave me a guaranteed hour and 10 min commute +- 10 min. And the S2000 was great at 35-50 mph on those roads. And then even small back roads started to clog up with box trucks and plumbers in commercial vans trying to avoid the same traffic I was running from. So now I can shift when I want or stick the car in full auto mode and zone out. No regrets with my traffic situation. If I lived elsewhere, I'd still own the S2000 until it rotted out from under me.
On the plus side, the SRT6 is almost exactly the same size as the S2000 but with a 4 ft shorter turning circle and the supercharged V6 is easily modded. Mine is putting out 410 HP and 390 ft/lb (crank) currently. The great gobs of torque (>90% of peak) from 1,800 - 6,000 RPM makes up for the great Aisin gearbox and shift lever in the S2000.
- Summer = Crossfire SRT6 aka SLK32 AMG.....5 speed lever shifted, lockup converter 2-5.
- Winter = Mercedes R500 4Matic.....7 speed paddle shifted, lockup converter 1-7.

My dd is an automatic Tacoma. I was spoiled by the S, I can't stand long throw, sloppy shifters. Plus I have to wear steel toe boots to work and I can't stand driving stick in them. I wear driving shoes when I drive the S to work, and then swap shoes when I get there. That is something I am willing to do with the S, but not something I want to do every day.

I haven't owned an automatic since 1999.
I don't foresee any future car purchases that won't be "row your own" either.

Never owned an automatic and never plan to. I love the involvement of a 3-pedal manual, regardless of how the shifter feels. Each one is unique in it's own way and adjusting to the nuances is the fun part.

6MT, not the great option for my left knee, but I can still manage. lucky enough, i don't have much traffic for my commute. but even in moderately heavy traffic and with my left knee "not complaining", i would still go for MT over auto.
