The £1000 car challenge....
Right , my parents 'run around' has broken so have up to 1000 in cash to buy a car.. they ONLY ever use the car to pop to the shops and take garden waste to the dump.. MPG does not matter, just need something with a large enough boot that is going to be cheap enough to service once a year i found a 2L Mondeo that looked quite tidy at £500 but i though i must be able to do better - any ideas ? happy enough to travel for a good car BUT ideally needs to be within 50 miles of hp20 so what can you recommend?
You're right to go wih something very mainstream like Ford.
There's interesting stuff out there (I bought a Mitsi Galant a few years ago) but parts are expensive for cars like this. Much better head for a Ford or Vauxhall where parts are cheap and second hand parts plentiful.
If MPG doesn't matter at all, then the V6 lumps offer a nice drive and very cheap prices, as people don't want to run them.

5 door, relatively low mileage, cheap insurance, very cheap parts. Too small though?

Saab 9000. Best banger we ever bought, cost us £500.
Just go for the 2.0 litre basic engine. Absolutely huge boot, as comfortable as anything I've ever been in and got through 2 MOTs with no advisories even though it was a 15 year old car. It went for miles with no complaints, but spares are cheap as breakers always seem to have Saab parts and they're of an age where everything wasn't computer controlled so your parent's local garage can work on them.
High miles doesn't seem to bother them either.
Still miss ours in a lot of ways.
Alternatively, the 9-5 replacement model seems to be at rock bottom prices since the news of Saabs demise, a lot of car for the money and they're GM by this time, so spares are not difficult to find. Still one of the comfiest ways to take crap to the tip I can think of.
They ought to be able to get this for £800
