Thought the passat only conjured 270hp so the Jag must be something special

Is it any good? I used to work next to a place called Peatman & Cox, they made a few quid breaking old XJs back in the day

Passat is chipped - just over 300

Jag is 400 out of the box, similar on the lbs ft

Is it any good? Yes, better than you'd think, very good balance between comfort and speed, plenty of toys. Subtle with a big stick. Auto. Blower. I like

An old landlord of mine had one when I had just graduated. It had presence, subtle but looked the part. Always wondered what they'd be like to drive

One thing modern BMs lack is comfort :)

I suppose it's not as sporting as my old M5 (handling wise) but is more sporting than my quattroporte. It rides better than both. Cars like the Maser are more of a comparison than big engined Mercs and Audis. Not as inconspicuous as I would like though. Seems to attract a bit of the green eye from people in uniforms...

I'll keep it for a couple more months and then decide if I want to keep it longer.

Massive fan of both of those cars, Gad.

If I didn't have a 120 mile round trip to work every day, I would spend my motoring days cycling through motoring curiosities (I mean that in the nicest possible sense!)

yeah, £40/£50 a day or so would be too much

I wouldn't do it in a decent car anyway

these days when I have treks to make I invariably hire something or get the train

there are lots of curiosities (IKWYM by that) to cycle through and although I've had a few, there are plenty more to try

Heard an R recently, or at least it had an R badge. Astonishingly ugly thing, but I think it may have had an aftermarket exhaust as it was pretty loud. Sounded pretty similar to the C63 AMG merc actually. Very nice noise.

Definitely the jag for me out of the two, is it the same engine that is in the Xk8R?

think so - 4.2 V8

you'd probably be surprised by the shove of the W8 - it's very quick, especially once rolling, traction is obviously exceptional, whereas you get a chirrup from the Jag despite the electrickery and the bigger back tyres
