My concern with that on the back ( with it being so light ) is that someone of the light fingered fraternity would also notice - would rather it locked away / put inside something.

It's not perfect I agree but negates the bongo.. I dunno whether that is good or bad?

You say a van is out of the question but a VW Transporter would make a good daily
(relative) Performance, reliability, fuel economy, loading area/headroom, low depreciation and nice to drive.
If it's obvious it's not a work van you might avoid attention of thieves.
If you need more windows/seats you could look at the 'Caravelle' (I think?) version, seats can be switched around to suit load.
