I really, really don't like little petrol engines

They can do what they like to them, I can still tell they're small

But one thing that seems to stand out is manufacturers are charging a premium for petrol engines/discounting diesels

The smart move might be a social pariah diesel on a two or three year lease

I'd never drive into London or a big city so not exactly much to worry about

I'd add automatic to that diesel too - it suits the characteristics of the engine and in this type of car for what you want to do in it, who wants to change gear manually. If it's new and covered by a decent warranty it's not an issue.

What about a last gen CR-V with an extended Honda warranty but on your own 'finance' and then sell or keep at the end of the 'term' depending how good / shit it has been?

JLR and Audi have fields full of unsold Diesels - as do most.

I'd imagine they're giving away the non-WLTP compliant ones by now. They'd need to pay me a lot to take one, but that's another story.

But the current anti-Diesel panic is so overblown, they now make more sense than they ever have before.

I think I will just have to commit driving a lot of cars and let that decide it because when I look at most of them I can't summon up any enthusiasm

This. I was in the Seat dealer the other day - my wife is thinking of changing her PCP car early as her place of work has changed the mileage has gone up and it's more motorway, so she's looking for something with a little more poke in the 40-70 range than her (really rather fun) Seat me one point nothing.
I was looking at the Ibiza FR (assuming that was still the sporty / top of the range one) and was astounded to find it comes with a one litre engine, albeit in three levels of tune. The sales guy said the middle one was best as it only had 5 gears and was torquier / required less gearshifts than the more powerful 6 speed speed model.

I made my excuses and left.

About the only mfr. left that believes there ain't no replacement for displacement is Mazda.

The 2 & 3 Skyactives might be worth a look.
