Default Average Speed Cameras on the Motorway

I spend a fair bit of time on motorways and always slow for the roadworks, even when they are not camera controlled.

When in the sections of roadworks that are covered by average speed cameras I regularly see people exceeding the speed limit. If it was the occasional car I would just chuckle thinking that they don't know what average speed means, but recently there do seem to be a lot of professional drivers that seem to ignore these cameras.

So my question is do these things actually work? Does anyone have first hand knowledge of them, or are we all being had by an expensive to install bluff?

I was thinking that as well, quite often I use the M25 from Jnct 15-21 and I know on occasions I must have been averaging over 50+ mph but nothing in the post so far - thank god!!

I put the cruise control on at the limit and .... sit like you watching loads of people go past !

I work on the basis they could work as that is why they are there .... and don't want points on my licence .....

They do work, but not necessarily all the time. Certain ones however are dummies. Lane switching also used to work.

but I think that most people don't understand the nature of avergae speed cameras seeing as a lot of them fly past your and slow for the camera. FAIL!

They work on recording your first speed then they record your next speed when you go passed.
They dont record your average speed depending on how long it takes you to cover the distance between the 2 points which is how people can speed in between the cameras.
