Talking Bargain! Or too far gone?

Hey guys,

Been looking at cheap cars for a bit of a challenge, the intension is to find a cheap car, buy it and bring it back to life, with a spend cap in place.
Hopefully with the end plan to keep it, sell it on or break for parts if all else fails.

So the car in question at this point is a 2001 1.9 tdi mk4 moredoor Golf in reflex silver. The reason for mk4 golfs, there are billions of them out there which means cheap scrap yard parts

The car will not start, with a charged battery the dash lights up but when you turn the ignition key to start you get nothing, not even a click to suggest starter motor. Any ideas?

The Stereo is missing.

Suspect a power steering leak, as there were a couple bottles in the boot of the car and signs of the power steering being topped frequently.

The car has NOT got a panel on it that will not require attention, the two passenger doors will need replacing, both rear arches have big dents in them, the seals under the doors are dented in completely, the front and rear bumpers are dislodged and out of alignment, the aerial is missing. a small amount of rust on the passenger seal but not anywhere else.

Overall the car is pretty rust free.

There are various suspension related woes.

That all said, there is something about this car that is screaming at me, mainly the engine 1.9 tdi, i had a golf mk5 1.9 tdi a while ago and it was bomb proof. the fact it has cruise control and air conditioning, electric windows all round highlights this.

Price you ask well...

It has been offered to me at price of £100

So would you, wouldn't you ? Excuse the naff pics !

Some of the damage

Thanks guys !

124k miles?

So it needs a rack + god knows what else. Starter could be a fuse .... or a relay .... OR something has seized which is causing one or both of the former to fail.

I would want to go in with my eyes fully open otherwise it's a driveosaurus and it will become a source of hate as it sits there slowly releasing parts to eBay / the atmosphere.

Could just be the ignition switch, a common problem. Which engine? if it's the ASZ 130pd it pulls like a train and is bullet proof.
Suspension is usually front bushes.

I'd spend the £100 on crack, quite frankly; it'd make more sense.

It's not even an interesting wreck.

A crack might be a better bet

It's a shed even in good condition IMO.

How much is a 'good' one going for? Surely not more than £500 or £1k max?

My ‘dog car,’ an audi estate has a similar engine. The car has done 279,000 miles to date. I remapped it at 275k and it goes great! 48mpg and meant to be 170bhp! The engines are great but sadly the carcass that houses yours isn’t!

They are easy fixes, although mk4's are a bit of a pig to work on, unless you're used to them. I've had 3 of them over the years (1.8T, 2x PD130's).
That example is bean can fodder - replacing the panels - still fifty quid each and they won't ever match up in Silver. It will need £500 plus in spends - then it's still worth about the same in average condition. Scrap it.

You won't make any cash out of mk4's, unless you spend more and go up to an R32 with issues to fix.

330d's are worth a punt perhaps (E90 on). Some bargains out there
