Oil Filter leak

 Just taken my S into Johnsons Honda - Slough having had oil drip onto garage floor. Oil all over underside of car and exhaust, blue smoke everywhere as I drove - very disconcerting.

Found that oil filter was cracked 2000 miles after 1st service. No problem until 3 days ago, shame nobody followed me after Surrey meet, they may have seen the blue smoke!!!

Could be isolated problem or a fault on a batch of filters. Johnsons are sending it back to Honda to check. :fingerscrossed:

Was it visibly cracked do you know?

I had one leak (and I bought that from Johnsons in Oxford), but nothing looked wrong so I've always thought it was just my fault.

No visable signs that I could see without climbing under the car. They found it when on the ramp and cleaned off.

If it's cracked my gut feeling would be handling damage prior to fitting or damaged during fitting and just taken a while to manifest. These things don't just split. With something like a filter they're shelled out like peas. There'll be thousands and thousands affected if its a manufacturing problem.

Did they tell you it was cracked or did you positively see and confirm it was cracked? Wouldn't be the first time a dealers lied to avoid looking like a complete bunch of useless :insertrudeword:

Didn't see the filter but the leak was definitely coming from the filter area and all is ok now. No reason to distrust the dealer as they know I am related to a Honda employee and VERY quick to use that link if I do not get EXCELLENT service!

Based on that I would suspect it was either a snagged o-ring during assembly after having been changed (most common reason for oil filter leaks) or someones dropped or damaged it prior to fitting (and I mean anyone in the entire service parts storeage/shipping/fitting chain).

Unfortunately I've too much experience of Honda dealers privately and other marques professionally to take what they say at their word.

I typically reckon the service manager/sales manager have their grannies on ice in the back just in case they need to throw her in to make the sale :)
