HRV is as bland on the outside as the Toyota is on the inside.

CX3 is bland in and out.

Vitara looks nicer .... With the state of the roads - something supple is preferred but still nice to drive / sit in.

going to go look at deals - might be a good time for a cheap one.

UF do you have a spec in mind? Are you going for a finance leveraged not splashing out ready cash? (Two different questions: feel free to ignore the unseemly one, finance is your own business, however it does interplay with the spec, age of vehicle and the intended ownership span that you plan).

Diesel, petrol, LPG or electric?

I don't care about owning it. I've come to the view that cars to abuse for commuting should be treated as disposable tools.

Spec - over and above satnav / built in mm etc etc I'm not bothered about paying more for it.

208 GTi like mine. Cheap lease deal, has all the toys you could want. Heated seats, dual zone climate control, satnav (though Google Maps is much better), DAB, USB, bluetooth, rear parking sensors, glass roof for a semi-convertible feel, it rides well, goes quite well, 40mpg on average for me.

A lot of these were "sold" on 2 year 5k per year leases about 2 years ago, so should soon be coming back to the dealers with low miles. Probably make for a good 2nd hand buy.

I did think your 208 was / is a very pleasant place to be in - surprisingly so in fact.

Haha 106 diesel to scrap it!
Couldn't believe reviews of the 208 GTi quoting > 50mpg yet it still has a petrol engine?

Sounds fun - another was uncompromising driver's car that has developed up into a lux magic carpet ride ish.

Nor can I - I'd get it down to 19 MPG pretty fast. Those downsized-particulate engines have two distinct sides, remember!

And I'd need a new HPFP and turbo at every cambelt change...

Has someone yet told PSA that their engine has a timing chain? They're meant to last longer than cambelts, but clearly don't.

Mind you, if you're gonna give it back after a couple of years, it doesn't matter.

Probably far less painful than a Slit's Unwieldy Vehicle too.

The engine is a THP unit, developed with BMW (and used in the MAXI Cooper).

As I say, I'm averaging 40mpg, but most driving I do is night-time motorway stuff, so it's a matter of setting the cruise control and wafting along.

I'm probably going to go for something slightly more comfortable and slightly less powerful next time.

Careful! you will regret those words the minute you get that "something less powerful".
