Favorite twisty roads
Hi, Gang :hello: !
I started a similar post in S2000 Talk, but now let's do something more local, too. I would request that we build a repository of fun roads/drives, which we know of or have experienced. Thanks to Raul, for making this a sticky  !!! |
I'll start!!!
Obviously...The Dragon, is a no-brainer, but it is 5 hours from central NC. If you are in the Piedmont area, then here are directions for the Zoo drive. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...be2a58d092.jpg Zoo Run 1 Starting from NC Zoo (American) Parking Lot (zero out trip meter)...exit the Zoo Turn RIGHT onto Hwy 159/Zoo Parkway At 3.2 miles turn RIGHT onto Old Cox Rd At 8.9 miles...reach STOP SIGN turn LEFT onto Old NC Hwy 13 At 13.2 miles...come to STOP SIGN...Cross Hwy 42 onto Grantville Lane At 15.5 miles...turn RIGHT onto Buffalo Ford Rd At 17.9 miles...reach STOP SIGN...cross over Holly Springs Rd...cont on Buffalo Ford Rd At 20.2 miles...reach STOP SIGN... turn RIGHT onto Hinshaw Town Rd At 20.9 miles...turn LEFT onto Deep River Church Rd (Rougher surface) At 23.2 miles...reach STOP SIGN turn RIGHT onto Hwy 42 At 23.3 miles...turn LEFT onto Riverside Rd (Wait for all to catch up) At 30 miles...reach STOP SIGN...turn RIGHT onto Bennet Rd At 33.4 miles...reach STOP SIGN at ERECT...go straight ahead (Fork Creek Mill Rd) At 35.7 miles...turn LEFT onto Little Beane Store Rd/Fork Creek Mill Rd At 41.5 miles...reach STOP SIGN turn RIGHT onto Hwy 705 At 42.4 miles...at SEAGROVE...bear RIGHT onto Seagrove Plank Rd At 45.2 miles...reach STOP SIGN turn RIGHT onto Old NC Hwy 13 (short 45mph) section At 48.5 miles...turn LEFT onto Old Cox Rd At 50.1 miles...turn RIGHT into NC Zoo (African) Parking Lot ****WARNING**** These are secondary roads, with double yellow lines almost the entire route, and a fair amount of curves. So, unless we get behind extremely slow moving traffic, there are (bascially) no safe places to pass. |
Old Mill road in Maple Hill NC, (between Jacksonville and Burgaw). Its not the greatest road, but its the best road around my area. About 4miles long and has a a few decreasing radias turns. Its a pretty high speed road, nothing as tech as the dragon.

from US 64 and 751 intersection going north on 751 all the way up to the intersection of 751 and NC 54. There are many sub road in that general area are great too. I usually go from High House in Cary going West cross NC-55, I think that is the Green level Road. Mainly farms and trees some curves and elevation changes and not a lot of traffic.

In Rutherford County, travel hwy64 through Lake Lure, Chimney Rock area. On the way up from Rutherfordton all the way to Hendersonville. Perfect roads for s2k's and knee dragging.

Great idea, Steve! For those who didn't make the zoo run described above, it is an awesome drive. :D
The Miata Drives site has some pretty cool NC routes mapped out. Ron and I have done the NC one called "Troy Area, the Uwharrie Forest"; NICE! www.miatadrives.com |
Boone, North Carolina
Steep mountain curves if your traveling up to Appalachian State and also some very twisty roads to any ski mountains, BTW there is no rail if you fall off!!! Only tree!!! |
there is a nice road on the way up to Sparta in the mountains on hwy 21 it reminds me of the dragon just not as long

I just got back from Summit Point for the NASA Hyperfest. After driving the track, I drove from there to down the old Charleston Road to Charlestown, about 12 miles. That is a great road with hills and awsome curves and super scenery.

Sometimes when I went to visit my ex-gf in college I took I-81 to hwy 91 to 421 from Blacksburg, VA to Boone, NC. 91 is a hell of a drive. You pick up 91 off 81 in a town called Old Glade Spring, VA (not too much town there from what I saw) and meet up with 421 in Mountain City, TN. I wish I had the S back in college. It would have been a way cooler experience.
