I will say 178 is pretty fun. Me and some buddies hit that up this past semester. Good times. However, it seems that a lot of the turns are repeatitive. They all kinda felt the same. It was fun none the less.

BTW there is no rail if you fall off!!! Only tree!!!
If your in the Boone, West Jefferson area try NC hwy 88 west from West Jefferson to Trade Tenn. Its a hell of a drive with plenty of hairpins, cambered corners and some straights to kill speed urges. Another good short drive is on Hwy 194 South from West Jefferson to Boone. Goes through historic Todd and lots of curves and scenery. I so have it made where I live cause of all the curves. Up here there are not a lot of straights longer than about 1/2 to 3/4 mile at a time the rest is just curves. Also BEWARE OF DEER AT NIGHT they are bad up here killed one two weeks ago on my birthday in my truck. Truck okay fishing trip ruined! Another great drive is NC hwy 88 East from West Jefferson to Sparta. Steep curves and once again No rails just sheer drop offs and trees or bodies of water to stop ya so be careful if your up in my neck of the woods. If you decide to come up this way let me know and we will go for a drive.

P.S. the cops up here are not very nice. They have a personal vendetta for ricers and rockets. So be warned about the s/ced hemi chargers and the 3 locals that have busas to tag our little butts when we get out of hand.

If your not use to sharp curves and big drops and narrow passages please bring a doggie bag so you dont mess up the S!

Good luck and have a great drive!

Starting from the road in front of the Pinehurst Resort
Right turn at stoplight onto Hwy 5
Left turn on Linden Rd. (green sign "Foxfire Village")
Right fork onto Foxfire Rd. (green sign "Foxfire")
Straight at stop sign
Right onto Hotel street just after post office with flag
Straight at stop sign across Hwy 73 follow sharp left turn
Right on Currie Mill rd. (it is the 1st right)
Right on Lucas Rd. (it is the 2nd right, Candy rd. is the 1st)
Right at stop sign on Dead Man Curve Rd.
Right at stop sign on Hwy 211
Left at light on Seven Lakes rd.
Left at stop sign on Carthage rd.
Left to stay on Carthage rd. (1st. left after house w/flag
and white paint mark on road) This is an easy turn to miss

Left at stop sign onto Dowd rd.
Right onto Peace rd. (it is the 1st. right and it is hard to see)
Right at stop sign onto Bethlehem Ch. rd.
Right at stop sign onto 24/27
Left onto Old Glendon (turn beside Phillips 66 gas station) This is no longer a Phillips 66 - it's now "3-D's."
U turn at the end of Old Glendon
Left at stop sign back onto 24/27
Go halfway around courthouse to stay on 24/27
Right onto Vass-Carthage rd. (no street sign, turn across from
big propane tanks) There is now a street sign marking this right turn

Right onto Farm Life rd. (It is the 5th right, it is a crossroads) Ignore the first crossroads warning sign - Farm Life School Rd is the next crossroads
Left onto McCaskill rd. (there is no sign, it is the left right
after you pass a school, if you miss it
keep going and turn left on Hwy 22.) There is now a street sign marking this left turn

Left at stop sign onto Hwy 22
Right at stop light onto Airport Rd.
Left into Botanical Gardens.

I drove this route this afternoon with my daughter. I missed one turn and had to double back, so my mileage and time are not exact, but I estimated it at just under 60 miles and about an hour and ten minutes. I added a couple of observations in bold above.

99% of the route is scenic, and all but one section of the roads are very smooth and fast - although I found that I did not have to drive it exceedingly fast to enjoy it. There is a noticeable absence of speed limit signs from the turn onto Foxfire Road until returning to NC 211 - I was assuming the "unmarked rural 55 mph" law. Oh, and the Old Glendon out-and-back is outstanding

I look forward to driving it again in a couple of weeks with some company!

I've been on that 64 to route 9 drive and it was at night. Going north once you get past Lake Lure is crazy!!! Fun with the top down though.
