First off, this trip was more about the drive than any destination other than Niagara Falls. It took quite a bit of planning to enjoy the countryside, and still hit a few attractions, and not drive all day, and still make our hotel reservations in Niagara Falls.
According to my GPS, it was 709 miles one way.
We left on Friday, 7/16, and got home Saturday, 7/24.
We drove 2253 miles, 83.3 gallons, $249.07 of fuel (averages $2.99/gal), which produced overall MPG of 27.0
We had a blast. It was very relaxing staying off the interstates.

Blackwater Falls, WV:
Why I hate interstates...
Casselman Bridge, MD:
This bridge was built this tall so that cargo boats could go underneath as part of the C&O canal, but the railroad beat the canal to this point, so the canal was never trenched deep enough and no boats ever went under.

More of the C&O Canal, in Paw Paw, WV:
Getting up was easy, coming down without a hand rail was interesting for an old man with bad knees.

Harper's Ferry:
Those supports were not there curing the Civil War, and this rock was used as a lookout point.
