So, who here works for beer and high fives?

Anyone in Greenville or Raleigh that would mind adjusting the valves and checking the retainers in my AP1? Of course I'd actually pay you. I have a dealership telling me I've got a burned valve and, to be honest, I'm just not buying it and don't have the money to let them screw around with pulling the head.

I'd do it myself, but I don't have faith in my ability to find TDC as I've never done it before.

Dude just pull the valve cover and take a look for yourself. Finding top dead center is irrelevant. Just turn the crank until the cam lobe is directly opposite the valve you're checking. Its not rocket science. Here's a pic of a car I did a few months back you can see the difference between the damaged retainer on the right and the new ap2 replacement on the left. https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/uploads/g...78_1592076.jpg I'll bet money you don't have any burn't valves. Probably just a few broken retainers. This particular car had low compression on 2 cylinders and was setting misfire codes and running like crap. The retainers had failed to a point that the rocker arm was actually resting on the retainer and not the valve stem. It was not allowing the valve to close completely. This is a VERY COMMON problem on Ap1's regardless of mileage. This particular car had a little over 60k. Just pull the valve cover and rotate the crank to where the cam lob is as far from the valve as possible and check the rocker arm for a tiny bit of play. No play equals failed retainer. Swapping the retainers is a bit more involved, but at least you'll know what the problem is. Here's a pic of the retainer's after I swapped them out. Almost dropped a few valves on this one. https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/uploads/g...78_2425321.jpghttps://www.s2ki.com/s2000/uploads/g...78_2271170.jpg

Here's the part numbers for the Ap2 replacement retainers and keepers from honda. https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/uploads/g...78_1680322.jpg

ajusting is not hard. i've done mine a few times. it needs to be cold when you do it tho. oh and buy some extra spark plug gaskets. their a little stuborn going in. easy to tear. just take time when doing it. if changing retainers, there is a trick to keep from dropping the valve. stuff the cylinder with some small rope, then bring the piston up to the top til it stops. it will hold the valve in place til you get the keepers changed.

You guys rock. Other than a slightly rough idle and misfire codes the thing seems to be running fine. Also, I have a warranty that will actually cover replacing the retainers, assuming they're busted.

I'll try to pull the cover off tomorrow or this weekend at the latest.
