spun rod bearing

spun rod bearing
I live in Hickory NC and I am pretty sure I spun a rod bearing in my 2001 s2000. I just bought the car a month ago and have put less than 3k miles on it, there is only 65k miles on the car. I was driving average speed down the highway and out of nowhere the motor began knocking very loud. I immediately pulled over and checked oil and was almost 3 quarts low. I filled the oil to proper levels and it quieted a little but still sounds horrific. I do not know much at all about cars and was looking for some help or knowledge. Please let me know what I can or should do. I dont have the money to take it to a dealer right now to get them to fix it. Thanks in advance for any help!

Welcome,
Unfortunately it doesn't sound good. Letting the car get 3 quarts low on oil usually means that bad things will happen internally. You will need to either do the work yourself, which it is a lot of and very involved, or find a shop that will check it for you. Most likely they will have to pull the motor apart to take a look at it and go from there.
You might be better off looking around for a used motor in good shape and just swap them out.
Either option is not a cheap fix, several thousand at least.
Good luck.

Post a video. There should be no way your engine is knocking, even with 3 qrts low. I was going 120 around a uphill right-handed sweeper when my previous engine went on me. Are you sure you didn't do ANYTHING that would have caused this? No one will judge you, we just need information to help determine what this is.

these engines don't like running on low oil levels. quick way to blow one up! sounds like who owned it before abuse the crap out of it. unfortunatly its your problem now. take the oil filter off and cut it open to see if there is any metal in it. if so, not good. you could also pull the valve cover to inspect the top end just to be sure nothing up top let go. these are things you can do yourself. good luck.

It's either the TCT or rod bearings. Pull the TCT and sandblast the worm gear and if that doesn't fix it then it's the rod bearings. Then just pull the oil pan and check for yourself. Takes no time at all.
