John gets something he's wanted since he was 12
When I was a kid I was into collecting rocks. I know, I know it's geeky... but when I'd visit the Royal Ontario Museum, I'd go straight to the Geology exhibits. They had some pretty cool stuff... in geek terms... but to me the coolest of all was at the exhibit entrance.
It was pretty huge and I found it fascinating. It was an iron-type meteorite. It was about as big as an average microwave oven. I *Really* wanted one.
Well I got one finally last week. Mine is only about as big as the first two joints of your index finger. Nonetheless it's from space!
It (and plenty of other large and small meteorites) fell in Russia near Vladivostock on February 12, 1947 during the daytime and was reportedly brighter than the sun. Some of the fall were so big had to be removed with trucks and winches.
The Sikhote-Alin fall was even commemorated in a stamp.
I'm pretty happy about it but I was kidding about it being better than sex.
These are photos of my meteorite. They'll take a minute or so to load.
